Or something growing out of that sleeping person's body as the dire consequence of an experiment gone wrong? Is he the alchemist himself or just his vision? Or is it a small piece of those "Horrors beneath" which you wrote about? Incidentally, this book was right in front of me moments ago, but the infernal tentacles of the cover tend to distract me...
